Engineered or reconstituted stone can be up to 90 to 95 per cent crystalline silica, and its manufacture, supply, processing and installation has been prohibited across Australia since 1 July 2024, with imports banned from 1 January 2025. Natural stone is a different material and is expressly not covered: Safe Work Australia confirms a granite benchtop can still be made, supplied and installed, and granite carries roughly 10 to 45 per cent crystalline silica against marble's typical sub-5 per cent. Granite is the workhorse for Penrith kitchens, dense, heat tolerant and forgiving of a hot pan straight off the cooktop, while marble gives you the softer veining but will etch where lemon juice or vinegar is left sitting. Natural stone should be resealed periodically, commonly every 12 to 18 months on lighter granites and less often on dense dark slabs; drip water on the surface and if it darkens slowly, it is due. Porcelain and sintered surfaces sit outside the ban altogether and are the pick for west-facing and alfresco benchtops, being scratch, heat and UV stable, which counts for something in a suburb where the Bureau of Meteorology recorded 48.9°C at Penrith Lakes on 4 January 2020, the highest temperature observed in an Australian metropolitan area. They also come in the largest format we work with, slabs running up to around 3200mm by 1600mm, which is enough to take a full island top and a waterfall end off a single piece instead of carrying a visible join across the bench. Thickness is the decision that follows: 12mm suits indoor benches and vanity tops and keeps the slab lighter to handle through a doorway, while 20mm is the safer specification for a waterfall island, an alfresco run or any exposed edge that will take knocks. Where the processing is assessed as high risk, the business doing the cutting has to complete a risk assessment, prepare a written silica risk control plan, share it with its workers and have it in place before the work starts.
